Frequently Asked Questions
Except for the Theory videos, which can be considered as "mini extra classes" there are lots of questions that are typical to what can be expected to be done for homework or in tests. e-Learning Club students are expected to spend 15 minutes each day on working out these questions on paper (with or without using Theory first) and then submit their answers online into the Single Question Quiz.
Their answers are then marked automatically and immediately, and then a link to the video-memorandum will be presented. If there was a mistake somewhere in the calculations, the video-memorandums (where every step is explained by the MATHmechanic tutor) can then be watched to trace each step of the original attempt. Preferably the question should then be attempted again, without the video, and submitted again, until the mark is 100%. Parents will get a report each week on all these attempts.
We require a minimum of 15 minutes each day on this process, video-time included or not. Any more time than this is welcome, of course!
This is an excellent question, and one we hope all parents, and specifically students, will ask!
We believe that the secret to success in Mathematics lies in asking questions, and although the daily routine of searching for real questions can be considered research, and therefore "asking" of questions, we do know that there will always be individual things that students want to ask. It could be totally unrelated to a question from the website where they are busy, like a homework question, but we encourage students to ask them anyway!
This is done in an individual WhatsApp conversation, where individual and personal attention can be given to each child, whether by text, photos of the question or voice notes. More often than not these questions can be answered directly through a chat, but if need be we switch to a YouTube Live Stream to have a visual "class" (see here for an example), and if this is not sufficient we can also schedule an online class.
You have to fill in this form first. Once we receive it, we will make contact on WhatsApp to arrange for a telephone call, to confirm your information (this is a Bank requirement, and cannot be skipped).
This is all that is required! We will provide the necessary instructions on how to create a profile and for your child to use the website, and answer any questions you may still have. But once this required telephone call has been made, your child can start!
You will notice in the Debit order form that we require a 36 month contract. Allow us to explain this first:
Our month-to-month fee is actually R850. When we have a client that is prepared to walk a distance with us, we feel it prudent to offer something in return for the loyalty, and that "something" is first of all a discount of 53%.
The second reason for the 36 months period is because we know that Mathematics doesn't have a "quick fix" solution. There is no "add water and drink" solution, and a relationship needs to be built with each student to get the most out of all the effort we collectively put in. The period of 36 months for such a period of time fits in nicely with this philosophy.
But what if it doesn't work out, or your child finds that this isn't working? Well, if your child has tried the 15 minutes every day (substantiated by the weekly reports) we will cancel the subscription with a 30 day notice period.
Our only condition is that your child must've tried this approach - we are so confident in our success potential that we not only give a huge discount, but we also agree to cancel the contract if it doesn't work for a particular student.
Since our focus is on the questions that should be done with pen on paper, and not the videos, we report on the completion status of these Quizzes. Every week the report will indicate the quiz-attempt of the previous 7 days, and after that a list of all Quizzes done before, i.e. past papers or Baseline Tests.
Our pass-criteria for any test is 100%, as anything less tells us that a student still does not understand everything, and that is why we request that a quiz be done until it achieves a report of full marks. The report indicates these attempts with each Quiz, namely how many attempts it took to achieve a pass rate. The times and dates of each of these attempts also reflect in the reports.
As a parent you can then keep your finger on the pulse of whether your child has done the daily routine, and also where things may prove difficult (i.e. a test with multiple attempts without a pass) you can bring that under our attention for focused work.
You can start on this page and browse the various grades and topics for which we already have content. When requests for more videos come in, these videos are added to this database.
Yes! At the top of the page there is a button for "Afrikaans" so that you can see this whole page in Afrikaans, and it will also have a link to the Afrikaans questions and videos.
We have a unique form that we request students to fill in every day, after they have done their 15 Minute routine. In this form we essentially ask three questions:
- What did you spend your time on today? - This is just to encourage the daily discipline
- What are you busy with in class?
- Is there a test coming up soon?
These last two questions allow us to be pro-active where we can.
Each day our students receive a "Research Project", which really is just a trivia question that they need to go look for the answer, if need be. In this question they are reminded each time to fill in the Google Form, but we will certainly welcome parental oversight in this. The more completed Google Forms we get, the more our progress in Mathematics will be apparent.
